Biography contributed by Sydney Technical High School

Hedley Ernerst Burchfield Chapman was born in Deniliquin, New South Wales, Australia, on the 23/10/1896 (1). His parents were Ernest Chapman and Amy Beatrice Chapman (2), the family were devout Methodists with Amy attending church as stated in The Methodist, “Almost up to the time of her death she gathered strength at times to attend [church] twice on Sundays.” (3)

Early in life, Hedley moved to north Sydney, where he began attending Sydney Technical High School in 1911 (4). After his schooling he became a Surveyor's Assistant (5).

Hedley enlisted 23rd of February 1917, aged 20 at enlistment. He was given the rank of Sapper in the Field Company Engineers for reinforcements to the Western Front (7). He embarked from Australia 31st October 1917 and disembarked at Devonport, England. He marched into Parkhouse for further training and was sent to hospital 6th March 1918 with an in-grown toe nail.

He was sent to Rouelles, France arriving on the 6th of March 1918, before going A.W.L on the 26th of March for 5 days. He was fined 19 days pay and was given 14 days of Field Punishment No. 2.

After the war had ended he was granted leave in early 1919 to go back to the UK. He returned from leave and was promoted from Sapper to Lance Corporal in April 1919.

Iin August, Hedley returned to Australia and was discharged 2nd September 1919.

Not much is known about Hedley’s life after the war and his return to Australia. In 1927 at the age of 30, he married his wife Alison M Doyle (11) whom he had 2 children with, Ian and Kevin (12). His occupation from 1930 onwards was that of a clerk while his wife was a stay at home mother (13).

Unfortunately in 1942, Hedley’s mother passed away in north Sydney (14). His wife died in 1970, aged 64 (15) before his own death in 1976, having lived a long life until the age of 80 (16).
