William was the son of George Hooper Holden and Catherine Holden, of Fremantle, Western Australia.

His younger brother, 1948 Pte. Thomas George Holden 28th Battalion AIF was killed in action at Pozieres 4 August 1916, aged 22.

A younger brother, 3215 Private Albert James Holden, Camel Corps and 10th Light Horse Regiment, returned to Australia 10 July 1919.
