At the time of enlistment James was employed in Cloncurry, QLD.
Son of Michale Oneill of Crown Street, Hyde Park, NSW.
Commenced return to Australia on 10 June 1919 aboard HT Port Lyttleton. Failed to re-embark at Cape Town, South Africa on 11 July 1919. On 12 September 1919 James re-embarked aboard HT Anchises for returned to Australia disembarking on 19 September 1919
