Son of Albert Armstead & Elizabeth Armstead née McGlashan
It appears that Ernest had previously deserted from the Navy on 25 June, 1915 - Ernest Albert ARMSTREAD, Stoker, 2nd class, born in Geelong Victoria, 20 years of age, 5 feet 6 3/4 inches high, fresh complexion, dark brown hair, hazel eyes, scars on left wrist and above right eye, tattoos ship and flags left forearm. This is possbily why he enlisted in the Army under the alias of James Mason.
