Add my storyBiography contributed by Stephen Brooks
Oskar was the son of Ola and Maren Engelstad; husband of Cora H. Smith (formerly Engelstad) who had remarried by 1918.
He had been born in Norway and deserted from a Norwegian sailing ship called the ‘Cambuskenneth’, in Newcastle, NSW, during December 1913, at the age of 20.
Oskar was working as a miner and living at Maitland, NSW, when he enlisted. He married Cora only six months before he was killed in action.
Oskar only joined the 3rd Battalion in late September 1916. On the 5 November 1916 he was severely wounded at Flers in France. He died from multiple gunshot wounds six days later in the 38th Casualty Clearing Station.
