Son of William Hayes and Mary Elizabeth Hayes of Tooborac, Victoria. Brother of Albert John Hayes who was killed in action on 4 october 1917 while serving with the 7th Battalion and has no known grave.His name appears on Menin Gate, Ypres

Commenced return to Australia on 12 May 1919 aboard HT Soudan disembarking on 26 June 1919
