Born in Geelong, Claude was a Commonwealth Public Servant in the Department of Home Affairs at the time of his enlistment.
He enlisted on 17 March 1916 at the age of 27 years and 6 months. At the time of his enlistment he gave his father, the Stationmaster at Swan Hill, as his next of kin. His Next of Kin was later amended to his wife, Mrs Naomi Phyllis Jean Quinlivan whom he married in June 1916 as noted in the 27 July 1916 edition of the magazine Table Talk.
Corporal Claude L. Quinlivan to Miss Naomi P.J. Lawrence
A quietly celebrated wedding took place on June 13 at the residence of the bride's parents, when Corporal C.L Quinlivan, A.I.F. eldest son of Mr and Mrs J. Quinlivan, of Carlton, was married to Miss Naomi Lawrence, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs Isaac Lawrence, of North Fitzroy. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. A C. Kellaway, of All Saints' Church, Northcote. The bride was given away by her father. Miss Bessie Skene was bridesmaid and the best man was Mr Claude Bagot. During her husband's absence at Duntroon, Mrs Quinlivan will reside with her parents.
On enlistment Claude was appointed as Corporal in B Company of the 24th Battalion and on 9 September 1916 was transferred to the 5th Rifles, 58th Battalion.
He embarked for the front on 23 November 1916 on the Hororata.
He arrived in England on 29 January 1917 and was attached to the Australian Army Pay Corps in London.
Claude returned to Australian on 5 March 1919 on the Nevasia and was discharged from service on 2 June 1919.
He obtained a Bachelor of Law from Melbourne University and the 1947 edition of Who’s Who in Australia shows him as being the Deputy Commonwealth Crown Solicitor in Adelaide.
Claude died on 19 April 1967 in Prahran, Victoria.
