Brother: 627 Pte Joseph Harrie Nelson, 38th Battalion AIF was killed in action, 27 February 1917.

Arnold Edward Nelson enlisted into the AIF at Melbourne on 16 February 1916, one week before his brother Joseph. He was given the service number 5396 but this was later changed to 5714. He stated he was born at Mansfield, Victoria and was 28y 3m of age. His previous employment was as a labourer. He was unmarried and nominated his father William Nelson of Tocumwal, NSW as his NOK.

Arnold Edward Nelson was reported missing in action in the field, France, on 11 April 1917. A Court of Enquiry held in the field France, on 18 November 1917 deemed he had been killed in action on 11 April 1917. His remains were discovered in 1920 and Arnold's body was buried at Queant Road British Cemetery. His headstone has the inscription, “IN MEMORY OF THE DEARLY BELOVED SON OF W & A. NELSON TOCUMWAL”
