28 Jul 1916: Transferred 49th Infantry Battalion, Taken on strength of 49th Battalion from reinfs ex 4th Australian base depot Etaples

3 Aug 1917: Promoted AIF WW1, Lance Corporal, 49th Infantry Battalion
9 Oct 1917: Involvement 49th Infantry Battalion, Broodseinde Ridge, John was a runner and came under very heavy gunfire whilst getting the messages from the battalion to the brigade. He won praise from his superiors for showing bravery.
24 Apr 1918: Wounded 49th Infantry Battalion, Gunshot wound to arm. Transferred to 9th USA General hospital, Rouen on 25th April. Transferred to Touville on 28th April. Transferred to 1st Australian Convalescent Depot, Havre on 31st May. Discharged to Base "A" on 15th June. Rejoined unit on 17th July.
8 Jan 1919: Promoted AIF WW1, Sergeant, 49th Infantry Battalion, Made a temporary sergeant
26 Sep 1919: Discharged AIF WW1
23 Jun 2017: Honoured Military Medal
