Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

John Cross was only taken on to the strength of the 26th Battalion in France 12 days before his death on 29 July 1916. He was reported wounded and missing on that day although several men reported he was killed by a shell on that day. Several others stated he died after being carried to a dressing station. He was found by a Court of Enquiry held in June 1917 to have been killed in action on the above date. His remains were found near Pozieres in 1927, confirmed by the presence of his identity disc, though nor record exists of the disc being transmitted to his parents. He was reinterred in the Serre Road Cemetery the same year.

His brother, 2801 Pte. Lawrence Cross 25th Company, Australian Machine Gun Corps, was later killed in action in Belgium, 5 October 1917, aged 22.

They were the sons of John and Sarah Cross, of Kingaroy, Queensland.
