Served as an apprentice gas fitter with the Croydon Gas Company for three years.
Husband of Ethel Rose Emma Vigar nee Gardiner of Homestead Road, Caterham, Surrey, England. Alfred and Ethel married 19 February 1918 in the Parish Church, Caterham, Surrey, England. Rector Henry J. Heard officiated.
Commenced return to Australia on 3 September 1919 aboard HT Barambah disembarking on 17 October 1919 at Perth, WA
