Jack Fogarty was the 4th child of Patrick and Catherine Fogarty and was born in Kingower, Victoria. He enlisted on 14th October 1916 after a year in the cadets, having previously been rejected for having a chest circumference that was too small.
He served with the 24 Battalion, 6th Brigade which was part of the 2nd division AIF that fought in the many battles on the Somme in 1917 and 1918.
When he returned to Melbourne after the war he married his sweetheart Hilda Smale and they settled in Box Hill, Victoria where they raised 5 children. He worked as the railway signalman at Box Hill railway station for many years until his retirement and lived a long and happy life in Box Hill.
