My Poppy- Lal

My Poppy

Lawrence Robert Hanna known to us all as Lal Hanna.
My pop went to WW1 when he was 17. He returned home at the age of 21. He spent a year in Richmond hospital UK recovering from having his left leg amputated. He was given a prosthesis leg and a walking stick. We went to watch pop march every year up till 1972 when he died. He lost many friends in that war. He never really talked about it. He let all the grand children put on and take off his prosthesis leg. We always knew he was a hero, a brave young man from Liverpool NSW. We will never know the real fear they went through, but I will always be ever grateful to the diggers who sacrificed their live for us. There is a snippet about him in The Gallant Company book by H.R.Williams on page 126 his nickname was “LAL.”
