Jack McLean – aka John Thomas McLean – 1596
John Thomas McLean was born 4 Jul 1891 at Moruya, NSW the 2nd of 10 children of John & Anne Mclean. Thanks to ancestry user Sandown46 I now know that he was known as Jack and am confident he was working at Wooroolin in 1914 at the same time as his brother James. His name is included on the WW1 Honour Board at Wooroolin but is not included in the photographic memorial.
Jack enlisted in the AIF on 29 Dec 1914 at Brisbane and was assigned to 9th Battalion, 3rd Reinforcement. His unit embarked from Brisbane on board HMAT A49 Seang Choon on 13 February 1915. A letter in his file written by Jack in 1961 states that he served in Egypt, Gallipoli and France before being discharged medically unfit in 1917 from a gunshot wound to the right elbow at Poziers, France in Jul 1916. His right arm was almost useless.
Two of his brothers died during service in France in 1918.
•Joseph Ronald McLean – 2924 enlisted at Brisbane on 23 Sep 1914 and served in 15th Battalion, F Company. He died of wounds 2 May 1918 and is remembered at Vignacourt British Cemetery (Plot I, Row E, Grave No. 15), France
•Thomas Alexander McLean – 4869 enlisted at Lismore on 6 Jan 1916 and served in 17th Battalion, 12th Reinforcement. He was Killed in Action 8 August 1918 and is remembered at Villers-Bretonneux Military Cemetery (Plot III, Row F, Grave No. 7), Fouilloy, France
On his return from war service Jack lived in the Casino, NSW district and was a Municipal Inspector probably with the local council.
