Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Private Walter Tibbs was born in 1897 in Hunslet, which is is an inner-city area of south Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. He enlisted at Broadmeadows Victoria during August 1914, and lied about his age being only 17 and Walter gave his age as 22. He seemed to be farming at Tarraville in Gippsland Victoria. He came out to Australia when he was 15 years of age. His roll of Honour form filled out by his parents describes him as being an excellent violinist who was educated at Castleford Secondary School. In 1917 Walter's mother received his personal effects. He was originally laid to rest Artillery Road West Cemetery before being reinterred at Shell Green Cemetery at Gallipoli during 1923.
