John Hanley was one of four brothers who served in the AIF. His youngest brother served in the same battalion, 2137A Private Archibald Owen Featherstone Hanley 30th Battalion AIF, who was killed in action 8 August 1918, age 23.
John Hanley settled in the UK and married a nurse after surviving the war and never returned to his native town of Kurri Kurri.
