Son of Denis O'Brien and Elizabeth Agnes O'Brien nee Tracey of Street, South Melbourne, Victoria.
Herbert attempted to enlist during August 1915 but was found to be underage and did not have his parents permission.
Commenced return to Australia on 15 January 1919 aboard HT City of Exeter disembarking on 2 March 1919.

During 1924c Herbert married Mary Alma Sierakowski in Victoria.
