Biography contributed by John Edwards

"...519 Private Harry Leslie 'Dick' Griffin, 2nd Light Horse Regiment. Born and educated in Mackay, Qld, Pte Griffin enlisted in his home town in August 1914, and was posted to the 2nd Light Horse Regiment. After completing his training at Enoggera Camp, Pte Griffin embarked for Egypt with C Squadron, 2nd Light Horse Regiment, aboard HMAT Star of England (A15) from Brisbane on 24 September 1914. After a period of further training at Heliopolis Camp, he was deployed to the Gallipoli Peninsula in May 1915 and served at Anzac Cove until September, when he was wounded and evacuated to hospitals in Malta and later England. On recovery, he was attached to the 49th Battalion and deployed to France in 1916. Over the following year he was wounded twice more, spending periods of convalescence in England and Rouen before returning to his battalion in July 1917. Pte Griffin was killed in action during the Battle of Polygon Wood, Belgium, on 26 September 1917, aged 22 years. Several months previously, Pte Griffin's older brother, 2436A Pte William Alfred Griffin (/explore/people/327111), was also killed in action during the Battle of Messines on 7 June 1917, aged 31 years." - SOURCE (www.awm.gov.au)
