Biography

"Mrs. G. H. Mikalsen, mother of the late Pte. Mikalsen, has received letters from Sergeant D. Howell and Lieutenant C. M. Wrench, bearing sympathy and tributes to the deceased, and explaining that death came quickly from a machine gun bullet. The former said:

"He was such a bright and lively boy, well-liked by all the boys in the platoon."

Lieutenant Wrench, who was his officer, wrote:—

"He was a brave lad. Though the youngest boy in the platoon he always bore a spirit of joyfulness and ever looked on the biggest side, even in the 'glummest' moments. Your son was always one of the foremost to rush dugouts and machine gun posts. The loss of such a redoubtable spirit will be felt by us all." - from the Brisbane Daily Standard 20 Dec 1918 (nla.gov.au)
