Son of John Frederick Upham and Flora Upham nee Wooster of Burnett Street, Hatfield, Pretoria, South Africa formerly of Ballarat, Victoria.

Previously haad served with the South African Volunteer Rifles for 6 months. 

24 February 1915 - enlisted at Tasmania with the 26th Battalion rank of Corporal

18 May 1915 - promoted to Sergeant

21 June 1916 - recommended for Mention in Despatches but not swarded

19 November 1916 - promoted to rank of Company Sergeant Major

8 August 1916 - wounded. Invalided to England on 26 August 1916, wound to the left hand

6 November 1917 - Stanley married Ellen Hillock in the Registry Office, Southwark, London, England. Registrar C.E. Jones officiated

Commenced return to Australia on 31 December 1918 aboard HT Saxon disembarking on 30 January 1919 at Melbourne for onward travelto Brisbane

Medals: 1914-1915 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal

12 February 1919 - discharged at the 1st Military District as medically unfit due to wounding
