On a summer day in December 1889 in Port Pirie South Australia, Australia, Patrick Farrell was born. Patrick Farrell was Roman Catholic who spent his childhood in Port Pirie. He later met and married Margret Mary Florence Farrell and they lived a happy life at their home on 75 Mackinnon Parade, North Adelaide, South Australia, Adelaide. Patrick had light brown hair, fair skin and blue eyes, weighed 82.75kg and was 177.8cm tall. Patrick was a brickmaker and on 30th November 1914 he enlisted to join his fellow Australians in World War I. At the time of his enrolment Patrick was 24 years and 11 months old. His title was that of Private and his service number was 1345.
The first date recorded on Patrick Farrell’s service record was the 14 of March 1915 when he was admitted to hospital. It’s unclear what he was admitted for, but one month and one day later he re-joined his battalion fit, healthy and ready to fight. On the 26th of May, 1915 Patrick was admitted to hospital with an infection and spent a considerable period in and out of hospital. Patrick then sailed from Suez, Egypt to Port Lincoln in Australia and arrived on the 3rd of August, 1915.
After several months recuperating in Australia Patrick was declared fit for active duty again and embarked from Adelaide on 28th August 1916, arriving at Plymouth on 11th October. Patrick Farrell was due to march and join his unit on the 16th of October, 1916 but failed to appear at the parade as required. Due to this incident, Patrick Farrell was sentenced to 14 days detention by his Commanding Officer Major Newman on the 19th of December, 1916. After detention Patrick Farrell left for France via England and joined the 10th battalion in January 1917.
On the 17th March 1917, Patrick Farrell was admitted sick to hospital, rejoining his unit on 17th April. Shortly after, on 22nd Aprl, he waqs promoted to Lance Corporal. He fought through Bullecourt and all the battles in the Third Ypres campaign but was unfortunately admitted to hospital on the 29th of November 1917, but the cause was again unknown. Patrick was in hospital for a total of 29 days and was discharged on the 27th of December 1917. Shortly after he was discharged, he re-joined his fellow troops on the 2nd of January 1918. Patrick was then admitted to hospital on the 25th of January 1918 with a severe case of haemorrhoids. Haemorrhoids are when the veins in your rectum and anus are inflamed causing discomfit and bleeding. After recovering from haemorrhoids Patrick re-embarked on his journey to France at this time it was the 25th of January 1918. On the 30th of March 1918 Farrell went to brigade school to continue his development in the armed forces.
On the 6th of April 1918 Patrick Farrell returned to duty but only until the 27th of May 1918 when he fell ill with influenza which is a common but serious illness that leaves a person with cough, fever, joint aches and pains making them feel hot and cold. Patrick Farrell’s flu was not improving, and he was admitted to hospital on 1st of June 1918 but was then discharged on 3rd of June 1918 to continue his recovery however he was recorded as sick with influenza on 8th of June 1918.
Patrick Farrell continued his run of poor health when he was once again admitted to hospital, this time on the 4th of September 1918. The records are unclear as to his condition and reason for admission to hospital. His health improved to a point that on 7th of September 1918 Patrick Farrell was discharged and headed to the UK 10th Battalion but only a day later on 8th of September 1918 he was again admitted to hospital with the condition of haemorrhoids which he had previously suffered from. Patrick was discharged on the 1st of October 1918 but had another episode of haemorrhoids that put him back in hospital from the 15th to the 30th of November 1918. He left England to reyurn to Australia on 25th January 1919.
