Son of Thomas Henry O'Brien and Jane Sophia O'Brien nee Currell of Fourth Street, Port Pirie West, SA.

On 24 May 1919 William married Ethel Maud Mann, of Battersby, London, England, in the Parish Church of All Saints, South Lambeth, Surrey, England. Vicar Frank G. Green officiated.

Commenced return to Australia on 23 July 1919 aboard HT Canberra disembarking on 9 September 1919.
