Son of Samuel Palling and Edith Elizabeth Fox formerly  Palling nee Tolly of 'ANZAC', Murray Road, Preston, Victoria. Brother of Aubrey Palling who was killed in action on the 3 May 1917 and has no known grave. His name appears on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, Doris Rita Palling, Ethel May Palling and Ruby Vera M. Palling

During 1922 Reginald married Janet Lumsden in Victoria

Commenced return to Australia on 21 June 1919 aboard Konigin Luise disembarking on 13 August 1919
