Logan Village Museum

Alexander was born 22nd July 1891 in Pimpama and died 3rd May 1918 in the United Kingdom. He is buried in the Netley Military Cemetery Hampshire.
His parents were John William and Elizabeth Mary nee Mayes.
Alexander is remembered in the Logan Village Museum Honour Roll for WW1 as both his parents are descendants of pioneer families of the area.

Died on this date - 3rd May.......Private Alexander Arthur Duncan was born at Pimpama, Queensland in 1891. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 8th January, 1916 as a 24 year old Sawyer from Canungra, Queensland.

Private Duncan arrived in England on 13th October, 1916 for further training & was posted to No. 3 Command Depot at Wool, Dorset. He proceeded to France at joined 31st Battalion at the Front on 26th December, 1916.

Private Duncan was sent to Hospital on 21st January, 1917 with Trench feet. He was sent to England & admitted to 1st Southern General Hospital at Edgbaston on 26th January, 1917. Private Duncan was discharged to furlo on 5th June, 1917. He was posted to No. 3 Command Depot at Hurdcott, Wiltshire on 29th June, 1917 & rejoined his Unit in France on 16th August, 1917.
Private Duncan was detached to 8th Machine Gun Company as a Carrier on 30th August, 1917 from 31st Battalion. He was transferred to 5th Australian Machine Gun Battalion & joined them on 4th April, 1918.

Private Duncan was wounded in action - Gassed on 17th April, 1918. He was invalided to England & admitted to Royal Victoria Hospital, Netley, Hampshire, England on 26th April, 1918 – dangerously ill from effects of Gas (shell).

Private Alexander Arthur Duncan died at 10.30 am on 3rd May, 1918 at Royal Victoria Hospital, Netley, Hampshire, England from Gas Shell poisoning received in action. (The Medical History form states that Private Alexander Arthur Duncan died from gas burns (by shell). (The Admissions to Hospital form states the “patient died 10.30 am of Acute Bronchitis & Odema). He was buried in Netley Military Cemetery, Hampshire where 49 other WW1 Australian Soldiers are buried.
