Biography contributed by Paul Lemar

Michael Thomas McINERNEY was born at Port Pirie on 04 July 1896 to Michael (born 1863) and Mary McINERNEY nee BARRY (born 1867). His parents had married at St Mark’s Church Port Pirie on 20.04.1892.

Michael Thomas McINERNEY aged 19 joined the AIF at Port Pirie on 23.02 1916 and was allocated service no. 933. He was assigned to the 43rd Battalion (machine gun section) with his next of kin being recorded as his mother Mary McINERNEY of Eighth St, Port Pirie.

Michael McINERNEY’s unit embarked for France aboard the ‘Afric’ on 09.06.1916 then to France on 25.11.16

On 02.08.1917, he was wounded in action in France. (gunshot wound to the chest.) He was evacuated to England and hospitalised. He returned to France on 29.09.17 and contracted scabies. On 27.05.1918, he was gassed on the western front. Later hospitalised and remained in France. On 01.11.18, he returned to England here he suffered chronic pneumonia. Shipped out to Australia on 17.12.18. Ended up in No. 7 Australian General Hospital at Keswick on 29.01.1919. Shortness of breath and general illness.

Applied for incapacity discharge which was initially denied despite shot wound, being gassed (mustard gas) and pneumonia. Medical report of 21.02.19 states he should be back to health within 6 months. Later discharge papers state he is discharged as medically unfit not due to misconduct. I cannot ascertain whether he was given a military pension. There is nothing in the file that states same. Sadly, it seems he has been discharged on health grounds but the examining medical officer states he is only ¼ incapacitated for future work.

Michael McINERNEY died at Myrtle Bank Soldiers Home on 25.09.1921 at the age of 25. He was listed as single at the time of his death.
