A SOLDIER’S PENSION.
At a recent meeting of the Port Melbourne branch of the Political Labour Council, when the matter of allowances to wounded soldiers was referred to, Councillor Gill was reported to have said:—"Young Prentice, who is totally blind, only gets 6/. His case is not the fault of the Government, but of some military bounder." The Federal Treasurer (Mr. Higgs) said yesterday that he understood that Mr. Gill had withdrawn this statement, but he desired that the public should be made acquainted with all the facts of the case. The facts were these: Mr. Bertie Prentice lost both eyes as the result of a bomb explosion in Gallipoli on July 31 last. He is about 23 years of age. On February 28 the Minister for Defence approved of the continuance of his full military pay for two months after that date. Mr. Prentice has not yet applied for a pension. When he does apply, he will receive a full pension.
