He was born in Shinrone  (Irish: Suí an Róin, meaning "seat of the seal") is a village in County Offaly, Ireland-formerly King’s County.

Although he survived the war he is remembered on the Aghancon Great War Memorial in Aghancon Church, Co. Tipperary.
