Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

William Cardinal Wynne served twice in the South African (Boer) War and again in WW1. First service was as a Private S.N. 37, 1st Queensland Mounted Infantry (B Coy), Boer war. Second service was as a Private S.N. 664, 6th Queensland Imperial Bushmen (1st Draft), Boer war. Third service was as a Private S.N. 4274/4279, 26th Infantry Battalion AIF, WW1.

When he joined the 1st QMI in 1899/1900 and his details were published with the rank and file in The Brisbane Courier, 18 Nov 1899, he was recorded as single with contact address of Ambulance Brigade, Brisbane. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 1st QMI, Bk 2 p. 117, it is noted he directed part of his pay to his mother Mrs. C. A. Wynne, City Ambulance Brigade. He served the full tour of the 1st QMI and was discharged in Brisbane on 23 Jan 1901.

A few months later he volunteered for the First Draft of the 6th QIB and embarked again for South Africa in Aug 1901. The members of the draft mainly consisted of men who had served in previous contingents in South Africa and were assembled as reinforcements for the 5th and 6th QIB contingents already in South Africa.

Men in the draft were not recorded in the original nominal roll for the 6th QIB, but he was recorded in the Boer War Service Paybooks of the 5th QIB (to which he was allotted), Bk 4 p. 100, where it is noted he directed part of his pay to his mother Phoebe Wynne, Kennedy Terrace, Red Hill, Brisbane.

The Brisbane Courier, 16 May 1902, notes when the 5th QIB embarked to return to Australia that, S.N. 664, Private Wm. C. Wynne, remained in South Africa for further service. The Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB, Bk 4 p. 98, notes he was discharged in South Africa on 2 Jun 1902 and he gave his address as Observatory Rd, Cape Town. It appears he remained in South Africa and Rhodesia, where he later married, for some time before returning to Australia.

He enlisted again in Brisbane in 1915 for WW1 and his Attestation Paper, dated 28 Oct 1915, notes that; he was born at Warwick, Qld, and was 41 years 10 months of age; he was married and an accountant; his N.O.K. was his wife Isabella Wynne, Mooloolah (later amended to Woodlands, North Quay, Brisbane); and he had previously served with the 1st QMI, and Doyle's Aust Scouts in the Boer war, and Rhodesia Volunteers.

William Cardinal Wynne was born on 30 Dec 1873 at Warwick, Queensland, a son to Cardinal Alexander Wynne and Mary Ann Phoebe Wynne (nee Reid). He married Isabella Henderson in Rhodesia about 1906/07 and they had one son in Rhodesia in 1907, who unfortunately passsed away from dysentery some 6 months later at Bulawayo. They returned to Brisbane, Australia prior to 1915 and some time after he returned from WW1 they relocated to Campsie in Sydney, NSW.
