Add my storyBiography contributed by Peter Rankin
Leslie was only 17 years old when he died. His epitaph written by his mother reads
I LEAVE THY PRAISES UNEXPRESSED, IN VERSE THAT BRINGS MYSELF REIEF, AND BY THE MEASURE OF MY GRIEF, I LEAVE THY GREATNESS TO BE GUESSED.
Family belief is that he turned 15 on the ship on the way to Gallipoli. His mother, Mabel Elizabeth Oldham (Hart) was married in 1899. Unless Leslie was very "premature" he must have been born after 1899. Unfortunately there appears to be no birth registration. The military records show his age as 17 overwritten 19 on recruitment. According to his mother Mabel Leslie's father left them when he was very young. Mabel appears to have formed a relationship with Mr Hart, possibly Abraham Alexander Hart, and both adopted his name. While Mabel's family was not Jewish she may have requested a Jewish memorial for Leslie in deference to Mr Hart. - courtesy of Dianne Stocks
HART.—On the 22nd May, died of wounds received in action at the Dardanelles, Pte. Leslie Oldham (Hart), of Brunswick, aged 17 years.
I leave thy praises unexpressed,
In verse that brings myself relief,
And by the measure of my grief,
I leave thy greatness to be guessed.
