Died on this date – 11th January…… Herbert Doyle Madell was born on 12th June, 1892 at St. Peter Port, Guernsey, Channel Islands.

According to information supplied by his mother for the Roll of Honour, Herbert Madell came to Australia when he was 19 years of age. Mr H. Madell, Farm Student, aged 19, was a passenger on Hawkes Bay which had departed from the port of London, England on 18th June, 1914 & arrived at the port of Melbourne, Australia on 29th July, 1914.

He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 11th May, 1915 at Liverpool, Sydney, NSW as a 21 year old, single, Labourer.

Private Herbert Doyle Madell, Service number 2364, embarked from Sydney, NSW on HMAT Orsova (A67) on 14th July, 1915 with the 3rd Infantry Battalion, 7th Reinforcements.

He was taken on strength of 3rd Battalion at Anzac on 2nd September, 1915.

On 27th September, 1915 Private Madell was admitted to 5th Field Ambulance at Anzac suffering from Diarrhoea. He was discharged to duty on 30th September, 1915 & rejoined his Unit the same day.

Private Madell was admitted to 2nd L.H. Field Ambulance on 24th October, 1915 with Dysentry. He was discharged to duty on 27th October, 1915 & rejoined his Unit from Rest Camp on 30th October, 1915.

On 29th December, 1915 Private disembarked at Alexandria from Simla. (after the evacuation of Gallipoli).

He embarked for overseas from Alexandria on Grampian on 22nd March, 1916 & disembarked at Marseilles, France on 28th March, 1916.

 

Private Herbert Doyle Madell was wounded in action in France from 22-27th July, 1916 (dates as recorded on Casualty Form – Active Service). He was admitted to 3rd Casualty Clearing Station on 24th July, 1916 then transferred to No. 16 Ambulance Train on 25th July, 1916. Private Madell was admitted to No. 8 General Hospital at Rouen, France on 26th July, 1916 with Shell Shock. He was transferred & admitted to No. 23 Stationary Hospital at Rouen on 29th July, 1916 with suspected Enteric. Private Madell embarked for England from Rouen on Hospital Ship St. Andrew on 1st September, 1916.

From the 3rd Battalion War Diary:

Casualties 23rd to 27th inclusive - 91 O/Ranks  Killed; 350 O/Ranks Wounded; 43 O/Ranks Missing

 

On 22nd September, 1916 Private Madell was marched in to No. 1 Command Depot, Perham Downs, Wiltshire. He was granted furlough from 23rd September, 1916. Private Madell reported back from furlough & was medical classified as B1 A (temporarily unfit for active service) on 9th November, 1916.

He was written up for an Offence on 7th November, 1916. He was absent without leave from Perham Downs from 4th November, 1916 till 4pm on 7th November, 1916. He was awarded 7 days confined to camp & forfeited 4 days’ pay.

Private Madell was marched out to No. 4 Command Depot at Wareham, Dorset, England on 13th November, 1916.

On 3rd January, 1917 Private Madell was admitted to Military Hospital, Wareham, Dorset, England seriously ill with Dysentry.

 

Private Herbert Doyle Madell died on 11th January, 1917 at Military Hospital, Wareham, Dorset, England from Dysentry.

He was buried in Wareham Cemetery, Wareham, Dorset, England where  12 other WW1 Australian War Graves are located.
