Served at the Anzac landing, where he distinguished himself by demonstrating great resourcefulness in organising small parties of men to carry water and ammunition to forward positions, actions that necessitated crossing open ground swept by fire. He again distinguished himself during the Lone Pine fighting by again displaying great coolness in carrying ammunition and bombs to the front line. He was almost 44 years of age by this time, and recommended several times for bravery. He was returned to Australia during 1917, suffering from general debility.
