Biography

In 1897, in the New South Wales town of Marrickville, Albert Victor Taylor was born. 18 years later, on 30 August, 1915, he enlisted, joining the 13th Battalion. On board HMAT Suevic, Private Albert Victor Taylor departed Sydney on 20 December.

He joined his Battalion in Egypt, then travelled to the Western Front. On 7 September, 1916, he was sent to hospital after falling ill. Again, in October, he was sent to England, suffering from Psoriasis. He fought throughout Belgium and France, fighting in battles such as Ypres, Polygon Wood, Passchendaele, Flanders and Amiens. In 1919 he was sent to hospital with influenza, but only stayed for 4 days. On 1 May 1919, Albert Victor Taylor arrived back in Australia after serving 3 years, 8 months overseas.

Prior to Albert joining, the 13th Battalion landed at ANZAC Cove in the afternoon of 25 April, 1915. It was heavily involved in holding the front line, from the first to last day.

In March and April, 1918, the 13th Battalion helped stop the German spring offensive. This offensive involved three attacks along the Western Front. The troops released from the Eastern Front were moved to the west, and used in a mass attack. These advances were soon checked, and the Allied counter-offensive began. Albert Victor Taylor’s unit played a vital role in the Allied offensive of 1918, fighting near Amiens on 8 August 1918.
