John Hall was the son of Charles James and Jane Hall of Tunbridge, Tasmania. His older brother 840 Private Ernest Victor Hall 40th Battalion AIF, died of wounds in France on 14 February 1917, aged 26.

John enlisted with another brother on 26 September 1916 and both were placed in the 40th Battalion. He joined the unit in France during May 1917 and was reported missing five months later at Passchendaele on 13 October 1917.

He was confirmed as killed in action by a Court of Enquiry held several months later. He has no known grave.

His brother, 2343 Private Andrew James Hall 40th Battalion was returned to Australia medically unfit on 23 May 1917.
