Biography contributed by Glenunga International High School

Joseph Mort was born in Wigan, England in 1884. By 1914 he was working as a railway porter in Adelaide. He enlisted in the 10th Battalion as a private with the first intake in August 1914 and embarked for Egypt on the Ascanius in October. He appears to have served on Gallipoli and, at some point prior to 4 May 1915, received a wound in his left hand which led to the loss of his thumb. Mort never returned to active service but was returned to Australia and discharged on 31 March 1916. His name is listed on the Adelaide Railways Honour Board.
