Alexander Evan FOULIS was born as Alexander Irving on 3rd July, 1872 at Golden Grove, Adelaide, South Australia

His parents were Thomas FOULIS and Mary Ann STEELE

He was working as a Farmer at Williams in Western Australia when he enlisted for WW1 on 14th April, 1916 at Blackboy Hill, WA

He embarked from Fremantle on the HMAT Argyllshire on 9th November, 1915 with the 5th Pioneers Battalion, 7th reinforcements

Alexander was taken ill and sent to the Borough Isolation Hospital in Weymouth where he died on 23rd March, 1917 of Cerebro Spinal Meningitis

He is buried in the Holy Trinity Cemetery in Weymouth

The inscription on his headstone reads;

"HE GAVE HIS LIFE FOR A NOBLE CAUSE, A SACRIFICE SUPREME"

His name is memorialised on the Australian War Memorial and the Roll of Honour located at the Williams RSL Hall in Western Australia

Alexander Evan Foulis was born at Golden Grove, Adelaide, South Australia in 1872.

He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 14th April, 1916 as a 43 year old, single, Farmer from Williams, Western Australia.

Private Foulis arrived in England on 10th January, 1917 with the 5th Pioneer Battalion, 7th Reinforcements.

A Medical Report was completed on Private Foulis on 22nd January, 1917 while at Camp 26, Larkhill, Wiltshire. He was described as having poor physique. The Medical Board recommended that Private Alexander Foulis was permanently unfit for General Service. He was classified as C3 (Permanently unfit for Service) at Pioneer Training Battalion, Larkhill on 2nd March, 1917.

Private Foulis was marched out from Pioneer Training Battalion, Larkhill on 5th March, 1917 & marched in to No. 2 Command Depot at Weymouth, Dorset the same day.

He was sent sick to Isolation Hospital at Weymouth, Dorset on 21st March, 1917.


Private Alexander Evan Foulis died on 23rd March, 1917 at Borough Isolation Hospital, Weymouth, Dorset, England from Cerebro Spinal Meningitis.

He was buried in Weymouth Cemetery, Weymouth, Dorset where 3 other WW1 Australian Soldiers are buried.
