'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He took charge of his company and worked untiringly, pushing positions forward and encouraging his men at a moment when they were in danger owing to our own shell fire falling short. By his personal example and energy he got his men to dig deep trenches for their protection, in spite of their being greatly exhausted.'

William became a practisicing Solictor in Gypmie before the war and continued to serve the services as a Legal Staff Officer from 1st July 1920 to 1st Janury 1940. He continued to practice in the areas of probate and inheritance law until 1961 when he retired.
