Frank Harris Rumbelow was born in 1895 at Encounter Bay, the son of Mr. Godfrey and Mrs. A. L. Rumbelow. He attended Victor Harbor State School.
He enlisted on the 27th August 1915 at the age of 20 years and 5 months. He was a gardener by trade, and was 5'6 3/4" tall with a fresh complexion, blue eyes and light brown hair.
He embarked from Adelaide on the 11th January, 1916 aboard the HMAT " Borda" and disembarked in Suez on 9th February. Originally assigned to the 32nd Battalion he was taken on strength by the 48th Battalion on 9th March. He sailed to Marseilles from Alexandria on 2nd June.
On the 7th August, he received a gunshot wound to the head at Pozieres and spent the next 4 months recuperating. He returned to the 48th Battalion on 19th December. During the coming months he would have been involved in the Battalion's ill-fated attack at Bullecourt, and would have witnessed the massive explosions as 19 mines were fired under the German lines at Messines.
He remained in the field until 12th October 1917 when he was Killed in Action at the 1st Battle of Passchendaele.
He is buried in the Buttes New British Cemetery in Polygon Wood in Plot 5, Row C Grave 3.
