Edward Sydney Hayes was born at London, England in 1892, the second child of Edward Thomas and Sarah Mullet Hayes (nee Nunn). He migrated to Australia from England with his parents and three siblings in 1897. Another five siblings were born later in Australia.

After being rejected on two previous occassiions he enlsited at Perth in December 1915 and went into camp at Blackboy Hill, where he was attached to the 16th Battalion. He went through NCO's school and passed as Sergeant, and was then sent to Bunbury.

Private Hayes embarked SS Shropshire on 31 March 1916 for Egypt, arriving on 22 April 1916, and proceeding to Heliopolis and then to Tel-el-Kabir.

He left for France on 9 June 1916 and went into action until August 1916 when he took ill and was sent to hospital at Estaples and tghen transferred to England. He was found unfit for military service and sent to Bonvington Military Hospital were he died of a cerabal tumour on 5 November 1916. He was buried at Wool Cemetery near Bovington. Prior to enlistment he worked as a cabinet maker at Bon Mache, Perth.

His brother, Private Graham Frederick Hayes of the 51st Battalion, AIF was killed in action at Pozieres on 14 August 1916.

Died on this date – 5th November…… Edward Sidney (Sydney) Hayes was born in London, England on 8th July, 1892.

The Hayes family were listed as passengers on Ormuz what had departed for the port of London, England on 17th September, 1897 & was destined for Albany, Western Australia. The family consisted of Mr Edward Thomas Hayes (aged 41), Mrs Sarah Mullet Hayes (aged 45) & their children Florence Magdalen Hayes (aged eight), Edward Sydney Hayes (aged 4) & Graham F. Hayes (aged 1).

Edward Sydney (as listed on Embarkation Roll) Hayes, Service number 5028, enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 28th December, 1915 as a 23 year old, single, Cabinet-maker from Claremont, Western Australia.

On 17th January, 1916 Private Hayes was sent to 22 Depot – N.C.O. School. He was promoted to Sergeant on 3rd March, 1916 with “A” Company, No. 7 Depot Battalion. Sergeant Hayes was transferred to 16th Reinforcements of 16th Battalion on 13th March, 1916.

Private (rank as per Embarkation Roll) Edward Sidney Hayes embarked from Fremantle, Western Australia on HMAT Shropshire (A9) on 31st March, 1916 with the 16th Infantry Battalion, 16th Reinforcements.
He was marched in to 4th Training Battalion on 24th April, 1916. Sergeant Hayes joined 16th Battalion on 28th May, 1916 at Serapeum & reverted to rank of Private.

On 1st June, 1916 Private Hayes proceeded to join B.E.F. (British Expeditionary Force) from Alexandria & disembarked at Marseilles, France on 9th June, 1916.

Private Hayes was admitted to 4th Australian Field Ambulance on 2nd August, 1916 with Influenza. He was transferred to Divisional Rest Station the same day. He was admitted to 1st Australian Field Ambulance on 2nd August, 1916 then transferred to Casualty Clearing Station at Amiens on 5th August, 1916. He was admitted to New Zealand Stationary Hospital on 5th August, 1916. Private Hayes was discharged to duty on 28th August, 1916.

He was admitted to 12th Field Ambulance on 30th August, 1916 with Rheumatism then transferred to Casualty Clearing Station. He was admitted to St. John’s Ambulance at Etaples, France on 31st August, 1916 – cause N.Y.D. (not yet determined). Private Hayes was reported with Debility after Influenza on 7th September, 1916. He embarked for England from Calais, France on Hospital Ship Dieppe on 7th September, 1916.

On 7th September, 1916 Private Hayes was admitted to Military Hospital at Chatham with Debility. He was discharged to No. 1 Command Depot at Perham Downs, Wiltshire on 23rd September, 1916.

Private Hayes was granted furlough from 25th September, 1916 & was to report back to No. 1 Command Depot at Perham Downs, Wiltshire. He reported back to No. 1 Command Depot at Perham Downs, Wiltshire on 11th October, 1916 & was medically classified as B1 A.

He was marched out to No. 3 Command Depot, Bovington “D” Camp at Wool, Dorset on 13th October, 1916 from No. 1 Command Depot at Perham Downs, Wiltshire.

Private Edward Sidney Hayes died on 5th November, 1916 at Bovington Military Hospital, Dorset, England from (suspected Cerebral Spinal Meningitis) Cerebral Tumour.

He was buried in Holy Rood Churchyard and Extension, Wool, Dorset, England.
