106 years ago today, on the 27th September 1917, Corporal Robert George Way, 21st Australian Machine Gun Company (Reg No-386A), clerk from 157 Beaumont Street, Hamilton, New South Wales, father of one ((Melva Joyce, born 21.10.1915, Hamilton, N.S.W., married 1942, Newcastle, N.S.W. to William Banfield Tennant, died?), was Killed in Action by a gas shell during the Passchendaele Campaign, Battle of Polygon Wood, Belgium, age 22 years 11 months.
Born at West Maitland, New South Wales on the 26th November 1894 to George Henry (died 1.8.1929, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 68) of 45 Cleary Street, Hamilton, N.S.W. and Ada Way nee Willis (died 12.8.1959, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 88) of 45 Cleary Street, Hamilton, New South Wales; husband of Florence Way nee Curley (married 9.1.1915, Wickham, N.S.W., remarried? died?) of 10 May Street, Islington, New South Wales, Bob enlisted on the 22nd April 1916 with the 14th Australian Machine Gun Company at Newcastle, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on board HMAT A73 Commonwealth on the 19th September 1916.
Bob is resting at Tyne Cot Cemetery, Belgium. Plot XLIII Row B Grave 9.

Mr. Way’s name has been inscribed on the Hamilton (Gregson Park) War Memorial, Hamilton Municipal District Roll of Honor, Hamilton Superior Public School Roll of Honor, Hamilton St. Peter's Anglican Church Honor Roll, Islington St. Mark's Anglican Church Roll of Honour and the Book of Gold. Name not inscribed on the Cooks Hill Superior Public School Roll of Honour.
There is no memorial inscription on the headstone plaque for the Way family to tell us of the loss of their son during The Great War, and I am unable to erect a Memorial cross, so I have placed poppies in remembrance of Bob’s service and supreme sacrifice for God, King & Country. ANGLICAN 2-113. 9.
Older brother Charles Henry (born 15.12.1892, West Maitland, New South Wales, railway porter from 39 Lawson Street, Hamilton, New South Wales and 3 Baird Street, Hamilton North, N.S.W., enlisted 26.8.1914, an Original Anzac, 1st Australian Field Artillery Brigade, Reg No-253, wounded in action 9.5.1915 (GSW left back & stomach), RTA 20.4.1918, died 29.6.1937, age 44) resting at the cemetery. ANGLICAN 2-145. 20.
