Bernard served at Gallipoli from early September 1915 until the evacuation.
Bernard Scolyer was recommended for a mention in despatches on the day he died, “For exceptional devotion to duty and courage in his work during the attack on Pozieres Ridge 4/5th August 1916 and the period following. He worked ceaselessly for 48 hours, during the whole of which time he was exposed to heavy shell fire. He was killed by an enemy shell at Tara Hill on the night the unit was relieved in the trenches.”
He was one of three brothers who enlisted from Exeter, Tasmania, and brothers Mervyn and Roy Scolyer both served with the Tasmanian 40th Battalion, returning to Australia during 1919.
