From eye witnesses, Herbert Powell was killed by a shell which fell short at Polygon Wood in Belgium in 1917. He had been born and raised at Rock Valley, Lue, NSW, about 20 kilometers from Mudgee in NSW. His half-brother, (their father was twice married) Thomas Hilton Powell died of enteric disease, Boer War, 5 December 1901.

News has been received that Private Herbert M. Powell, second son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Powell, of Lue, was killed in action, in France, on September 30. The deceased soldier was about 24 years of age, and prior to his enlistment was employed as a farm hand in the district. Mrs. Powell lost a son, Hilton Powell, in the Boer War.
