Biography contributed by tony griffin

Gilbert Ireland was the son of John and Sarah Ann (nee Overall) Ireland of Barunga North. John and Sarah objected to 19 year old Gilbert’s enlistment but the Executive of the State Recruiting Committee decided that the enlistment must stand.

Gilbert was born at Wokurna on 29 May 1899. A farmer, he was 19 years old when he enlisted at Port Broughton on 18 June 1918. Gilbert was appointed to 5th Reinforcements “S” UK which entrained to Melbourne and embarked aboard HMAT A37 “Baramah” on 31 August 1918. Gilbert never made it to the front because the war had ended before he was allotted to 27 Battalion on 14 November 1919

Gilbert embarked for Australia aboard SS “Konigin Luise” on 18 December 1919 and disembarked in Adelaide on 2 February 1920. He was discharged on 26 February 1920.
