Corporal Herbert John Macgarvey (Service No:4094) enlisted in the AIF in Tasmania on 12 January 1915, and was a Gunner attached to 3rd Field Artillery Brigade on 19 April 1915 when he embarked with his Unit from Fremantle WA for Gallipoli on board HMAT A18 Argyllshire. WiA (GSW) at Gallipoli Peninsula on 7 August 1915, Gunner Macgarvey embarked from Alexandria for Marseilles on 23 March 1916. Promoted to Bombardier (30 October 1917), then Corporal (24 October 1918) he embarked on 20 May 1919 from Liverpool for Melbourne on board HT Nestor, and was attached to 3rd Field Artillery Brigade at Discharge on 31 August 1919.
Bert was born in Melbourne, Victoria in 1895, second of three children of Paul Macgarvey (b1863 in Dundee, Scotland) and Catherine (Kate) Celia Wookey (b1870 at Snake Valley via Ballarat, Victoria). Paul was a Jute Preparer in Scotland in 1882 when he immigrated, arriving in Cooktown, QLD en route for Melbourne on board the Renfrewshire. Paul (a Tanner) and Kate married in 1892 in Melbourne, where they settled and raised their family and Paul was a Tanner and Grocer - Kate was a Greengrocer in the early 1900s. In 1930, Paul was a passenger travelling from Melbourne on board SS Karoola when he was reported missing when the ship docked in Sydney - '.... it is supposed by the police that he fell overboard' (The Sun; Mon 21 July 1930).
Bert worked in Melbourne as a Shop Assistant and Grocer, and was in Tasmania in 1915 when he enlisted in the AIF. In1915 in Hobart, Bert secretly married Frances Emily Brindley (b1892 in Hobart, Tasmania) -'it is necessary that our marriage be kept secret' (NAA; 1918) - the couple Divorced in 1931. Following his Discharge from the Army, Bert lived in Melbourne, where he worked as a Shop Assistant - Frances visited him and his parents there, although their marriage remained a secret. In the mid 1920s Bert moved to Sydney, where he worked as a Commercial Traveller until his death in 1945.
