Pte. James Frederick Buckland worked as an iron moulder at Anthony Hordern prior to his enlistment. (His brother, a pre-war cadet, 4076 Pte John Thomas Buckland, also served with him in the same company of the Battalion and he was killed in action at Polygon Wood, Belgium, on 10 October 1917).
They were the sons of John Thomas Buckland and Alice Maria Buckland, of Kogarah, New South Wales.
Another brother, 1240 Lance Corporal Charles Mason Buckland 4th Battalion AIF enlisted in September 1914, took part in the Anzac landing, and was later in 1918 awarded a Mention in Despatches before being returned to Australia on 1914 leave.
James was reported missing on 14 November 1916, in the bitter and freezing cold conditions near Gird Trench at Flers.
His remains were found in March 1917, identified by the presence of his wallet, which eventually was presented to his brother Charles Mason Buckland. According to anecdotal family records, James’ body was almost perfectly preserved by the snow when it was found.
James had also served in New Guinea during 1914 and on Gallipoli during 1915 and his family put the epitaph on his grave, “A SOLDIER OF RABAUL GALLIPOLI & FRANCE HIS DUTY DONE”
