67 years ago today, on the 8th February 1957, Private Alexander Campbell, 5th Battalion (Reg No-53A), wheeler from Earl Street, Holmesville, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 63. ANGLICAN 3-198. 28.

Born at New Lambton, New South Wales on the 24th January 1894 to John Lyle, died 20.4.1929, Balmain, N.S.W., age 72, and Mary Campbell nee Lanbourne, died 30.6.1939, Kurri Kurri, N.S.W., age?, of St. Helen Street, Holmesville, N.S.W. and Mary Street, Holmesville, N.S.W.; husband of Georgina Belinda Campbell nee Wooder (married 21.9.1919 at St John's Baptist Church, Plumstead, United Kingdom, died 19.3.1960, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 62, sleeping here), Alex enlisted on the 18th December 1915 with the 36th Battalion, Reg No-53, at Liverpool, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A72 Beltana on the 13th May 1916.
Admitted to hospital 24.9.1917 (boils on buttock), 24.11.1917 (trench fever), 21.3.1919 (influenza).

Wounded in action - 23.7.1918 (gassed).

Granted leave to England from 1.1.1918 to 19.1.1918.

Granted leave to France from 10.1.1919 to 24.1.1919.
Proceeded on indefinite leave awaiting family ship 2.10.1919.

Commenced return to Australia 20.12.1919.

Alex arrived home on the 6th February 1920 with wife Georgina, not being discharged until the 19th September 1920.

Mr. Campbell’s name has been inscribed on the Holmesville WW1 Roll of Honour, West Wallsend Soldiers' Memorial and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.

I have placed poppies at Alex’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
