Henry George MITCHELL (Service Number 159) was born in Goulburn on 22nd July 1895.  He joined the NSW Government Railways as a cleaner (first step on the career path of an engineman) at the Hamilton locomotive depot in May 1914.  In January 1916 he enlisted in the AIF in Newcastle.

He was allotted to the 35th Battalion (‘Newcastle’s Own’). He embarked from Sydney in May 1916.  On the voyage he was appointed Lance Corporal.  He was landed in England in July.  In August he was appointed Corporal, and a day later Sergeant.  In November he was sent to France.  In January 1917 he was attached to the Railway Construction Dept., West Capell. A month later he re-joined his unit after that attachment. 

He was killed in action on 29th May 1917, and buried in Strand Military Cemetery, Ploegsteert Wood, 2¼ miles SSW of Messines, Belgium.
