William served at the Gallipoli landing and was slightly wounded at Anzac during 1915 but was basically there for the duration. He was promoted to Sergeant before the Battle of Pozieres, during which both his brothers were killed. William was severely wounded by shrapnel in the right knee, evacuated to England and returned to Australia during February 1917.
His brothers: 1758 Pte Thomas John Stephens, 57th Bn, killed in action, 7 August 1916; 3951 Pte George Stephens, 5th Bn, killed in action, 20 August 1916.
