Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Arthur Frederick Hindmarsh was the son of Peter and Mary Anne Hindmarsh of Lyra, Stanthorpe, Queensland. Known as ‘Fred’ Hindmarsh, two of his brothers enlisted in the First World War. Only one of the three Hindmarsh soldiers survived the fighting. Fred’s father had passed away during 1914. His older brother, 4806 Pte. Edwin Hindmarsh 15th Battalion AIF had been killed in action at First Bullecourt only two months before on 11 April 1917, aged 32.

Arthur Frederick Hindmarsh was seen to be killed by shellfire near in the ‘Black Line’ during the Australian attack at Messines in Belgium. A Sergeant said a Lieutenant Bartley was killed by the same shell and that Hindmarsh was only about 20 years of age and a good lad.

He was buried in Bethlehem Farm East Cemetery by Reverend A.A. Mills.

His widowed mother, Mary Anne Hindmarsh received separate pensions for the loss of her two sons.

A third brother, 213 Private William Charles Hindmarsh 31st Battalion AIF was returned to Australia for ‘family reasons’ during October 1918.
