Webber tried to enlist in 1914 and stated he was 39 years of age. He was discharged medically unfit in early 1915 but enlisted again in April 1916 and was accepted. He said to be wounded at Bullecourt in May 1917 and was sent home to Australia with a crook heart in July 1917.

On Wednesday the death took place of Mr. John James Webber in the Albury District Hospital at the age of 46. Deceased was born in Deniliquin. About ten days ago he had a paralytic seizure. The late Mr. Webber enlisted on April 5, 1916, and served overseas in the war, and was wounded in May, 1917. While on active service he was a member of the 16th Platoon '' D " Company, 4th Battalion. Since his return Mr. Webber had been employed at the Albury railway station. He leaves a wife and four children (three boys and one girl).
