Robert Royden Carmichael was born on the 11th of January 1888 in the city of Port Germein, South Australia, but moved to Forestville, South Australia, Australia where he later married his wife, Mrs Alice Mary Louise Carmichael (whom was his next of kin). The World War started whilst he was working as a civil engineer.
On the 1st of October 1916, Carmichael was appointed as a Second Lieutenant to the Special Drafts of the Australian Imperial Forces at the age of 28 years and 9 months. Prior to his appointment, Carmichael served for three years in the South Australian Scottish Infantry which was disbanded.
On the 28th of February 1918, Carmichael left Australia from Melbourne, Victoria on the A71 Nestor which was a big ship which could hold the capacity of 350 people. Carmichael was embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on the 20th of April 1918 to Liverpool, United Kingdom. He was a part of the 32nd Battalion. Carmichael was already a Second Lieutenant for The Special Draft, Australian Imperial Forces but on the 10th of May 1918 he was acknowledged as a Second Lieutenant for the regular forces of The British Army.
Lieutenant Carmichael returned to Australia via the Nestor and disembarked on the 12th of December 1919. He was discharged on the 5th of January 1920, due to "termination of period of enlistment".
On the 5th of July 1923 Carmichael was appointed one British War medal. This medal was given to officers and men of British and Imperial forces for service in the First World War. Officers and men of the British and Imperial Forces who entered a battle zone or entered service overseas between the 5th of August 1914 and the 11th of November 1918 were awarded the silver or bronze medal.
